Davis Cup players to play at Les Ormes

Saturday 28th January 2006, 12:00AM GMT.

TWO of Great Britain’s Davis Cup squad will be at Les Ormes this weekend bidding to win the first leg of the Jersey Tourism LTA $50,000 men’s satellite tournament.

Alan Mackin, the man who met Switzerland’s world No 1 Roger Federer on his GB debut last year, and David Sherwood will be there along with Lee Martin, who was top seeded for the last CI LTA tournament in October.

Jamie Murray, younger brother of British tennis’s great white hope Andrew will also be at the St Brelade club.

But the top seed is Sweden’s Jacob Adaktusson, who won through the first three qualifying rounds of the Australian Open but lost in the first round of the main draw to the seeded Davide Sanguinetti, who is World No 39.

Meanwhile winner of the October event Great Britain’s Elena Baltacha is favourite for the $25,000 Caversham Ladies tournament.

But she will have much stronger competition this time with a large contingent from the Eastern European countries and several players from Asia and America.

There are only two other Brits in the ladies’ main draw.

Anna Keothavong, who is on her way back from injury and climbing up the rankings, has been awarded a wild card entry.

Both she and Baltacha have just returned from Melbourne after being knocked out of the Australian Open in the early stages.

The third British player is Katie O’Brien who is seeded No 8.

The only Jersey representative is Caesarean coach Andrew Evans who will be attempting to do what no other Island player has ever done and get past the first round.’ Said CILTA development officer and tournament director Hugh Raymond: ‘We’ve had an exceptional number of entries – in fact some of the players who turn up might not get into the draw which could be a bit depessing for them – but it’s good for us.

It seems Jersey’s become the ideal place to start their year’s programme.

‘There are a lot of players we’ve not seen here before and the competition will be a lot stronger than before, so there could be a few surprises.

The men’s draw in particular is full of unknowns trying to get ranking points.’ Play starts at 9 am tomorrow.
