UNION leader Nick Corbel is furious that Health Minister Stuart Syvret called for the sacking of a suspended hospital porter yesterday.

Senator Syvret was referring to the health worker who has been suspended for three and a half years on full pay after allegedly downloading child pornography on his computer.

Yesterday he said that despite instructions from the law officer’s department not to sack the individual, he had told his department to re-examine the case as a ‘matter of great urgency’ to sack the employee.

In the States this morning, however, he said that there was no way of ending a suspension until a prosecution had finished.

Earlier, Mr Corbel, the regional industrial organiser for the Transport and General Workers Union, said: ‘Without going into the details of the case, what Senator Syvret has done has brought the constitution of the Joint Council into disrepute.

He appears to be saying that his member of staff is guilty without a hearing having taken place yet.

How on earth can he expect to have a fair trial?’
