Burgis provides only squash upset

Tuesday 28th February 2006, 12:00AM GMT.

UNSEEDED veteran Gordon Burgis upset the form book last night, when he beat Paul Mundy in five sets to go through to the next round of the Insurance Corporation JSRA Closed squash championships.

But all the matches went as predicted in the men’s competition, with the eight top seeds all going through after winning their matches to love, although Kate Cadigan and David Steigenberger played well against No 6 seed Glyn Moignard and No 1 Mike Hopkins, respectively.

Junior Charles White gave Si Aziz a run for his money, but was finally beaten 3-2.

The men’s Over 35 quarter-finals take place tonight, and the Plate competition also gets under way, at the Squash Club, while tomorrow night the action moves to the courts at Les Quennevais, from 6 pm, with the veteran’s quarter-finals and the men’s quarter-finals.

Spectators are welcome.
