Prison drugs case in court

Tuesday 28th February 2006, 12:00AM GMT.

THE Assize trial began yesterday of a La Moye prison inmate said to have recruited outside aides to help co-ordinate the supply of £600,000 worth of drugs – right under the noses of prison management.

A jury is due today to hear another day’s evidence to help them to decide whether or not Gareth Paul Hume (24) was the main perpetrator in conspiring to distribute more than 20,000 ecstasy tablets and a kilo of heroin.

Hume admits using a mobile phone – a forbidden item for prisoners – to contact aides including Darren Roberts (21) and Steven Brookes (22).

Roberts and Brookes each pleaded guilty to conspiracy and were sentenced by the Royal Court last month.

It is expected that a verdict will be reached by tomorrow.
