Speed-up for smoking ban

Tuesday 28th February 2006, 12:00AM GMT.

A COMPLETE ban on smoking in all enclosed workplaces in the Island, including pubs, clubs and restaurants, is likely to be fast-tracked to be in place by the end of this year.

It would therefore be introduced in Jersey ahead of the UK’s complete ban, which is due to come in during summer 2007.

In line with that, there are plans to develop services available to smokers to support them in giving up the habit permanently.

The decision was made after Health Minister Senator Stuart Syvret listened to the strong lobby from breweries, publicans and members of the Jersey Hospitality Association against the intermediate ban in eating places only.

They claimed that an early ban would be complex to introduce and mean that they had to carry out conversion work which would be rendered useless when the total ban in all workplaces was implemented.
