Death crash police driver to be charged

THE officer driving the police car that killed a woman on St Clement’s Coast Road last August should face a charge of careless driving, according to the States police.

The police issued a statement yesterday afternoon saying P sgt Mark Hafey should face the charge as a result of the accident that killed 37-year-old Debbie Gardiner.

However, a lawyer representing Mrs Gardiner’s husband David, who was seriously injured in the collision with the police car, said that the police statement was ‘premature and unhelpful’.

Mr Gardiner has also said he was disappointed the charge to be levelled against the police officer will not mention the death of his wife.
