Saints seek pole position in Combination

Friday 3rd March 2006, 12:00AM GMT.

VICTORY for St Peter tomorrow and Coca-Cola Combination Division I will have new leaders for only the third time this season.

And a success for Jon Trigg’s men would throw the title race wide open as St Peter would head the table on goal-difference from Trinity with Scottish three points in arrears of the pair with a game in hand.

St Peter have been closing in on the top two following a run of seven consecutive wins and they will be looking to extend their unbeaten league run to twelve matches – their only defeat was 2-0 at Trinity in August 2005.

Scottish remain undefeated in the division while their only defeat all season was in the Charity Cup final back on 13 September last year.

In all competitions this season, St Peter have been defeated five times in 21 games while Scottish have suffered just the one defeat in 22 matches.

Trigg, who will no doubt again be wearing his ‘lucky’ white shorts whatever the weather tomorrow, said: ‘Midfielders Dominic Maher and Marcus Bailey will have fitness tests tomorrow on calf and groin injuries respectively.

If both are unavailable they will be a big miss, but it’s an opportunity for someone else to come in and stake a claim.

‘It’s a big game for both clubs tomorrow and whatever the result my players should be proud of the progress they have made this season in closing the gap on Scottish and Trinity.

‘For the first team and reserve team to be challenging for both the Combination Division I and Division I Reserves titles at this stage of the season is testament to the hard work that everyone has put in over the past two years.

‘The titles may be beyond both this season but with seven Island under-21s and two Island U18 players currently at this club the future looks bright.

‘The players can see that something very special is happening here and are desperate to be a part of it.’ Scottish manager Bob Kearsey said: ‘It’s a big game and everyone at Scottish is looking forward to it.

I am concerned by St Peter, they have slowly but surely ground out results and what is normally a two-horse title race is a three-horse affair this season.

‘Not only are they a danger to us they are a danger to everybody.

They are proving a hard side to beat, especially when they play at home.

‘Without being rude they have no superstars; but they are a hard working team with the dangerous formula of youth and experience.’ Both sides also have players in goalscoring form.

Scottish’s Ross Crick hit the 40 mark midweek with a four-goal haul in the Le Riche Cup.

Crick, who has scored in his last nine games, has failed to score just once in 16 games.

St Peter’s Marco Vieira is in fine fettle, too, with nine goals in his last five games taking him to 16 for the season.

There should be a good crowd at St Peter for the match to as the club are putting on a pre-match lunch which has attracted a full house of 80.

After this weekend, Scottish play St Paul’s (11 March), Grouville (28 March), St Brelade (1 April) and Trinity (8 April); Trinity oppose Rozel Rovers (11 March), Grouville (1 April) and Scottish (8 April) while St Peter face Grouville (11 March), First Tower (1 April) and St Paul’s (8 April).

Kick-off 2.30 pm.

JFA Wheway Cup holders Trinity will be bidding for a second consecutive final appearance as they oppose Guernsey’s AFC St Martin’s in a semi-final at the IJ Bathe Field tomorrow afternoon.

Kick-off is at 1.30 pm.
