‘Make First Tower safe’
Tuesday 7th March 2006, 12:00AM GMT.
ACTION must be taken now, say First Tower residents campaigning for pedestrian safety and traffic calming measures in one of the Island’s busiest areas.
At a crowded public meeting last night, the St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft and the Transport and Technical Services Minister Guy de Faye, along with parish officials and district Deputies, were told by parishioners that they still felt their safety was being compromised, despite more road signs and an anti-skid road surfacing on Tower Road.
On average 33,000 vehicles travel up and down the road weekly, compared to 16,000 on Great Union Road and 12,000 past Grands Vaux.
Drivers’ speeds average around 32 miles per hour – two miles over the 30 mile per hour speed limit.
Many residents last night agreed with Sandy Hugh, of St Anne’s Terrace, who said it was imperative to build a pavement along the road to ensure that children could get to school safely.
