THE Environment Department are preserving fish stocks by limiting trawler sizes and empowering fisheries officers to enforce EU rules on foreign vessels.

Environment director Chris Newton said Jersey’s fish stocks were in a good state overall and added that the growing shellfish industry was producing around £8m in exports every year.

Three decisions signed by Environment Minister Freddie Cohen in the last three months have set out to preserve the strength of the stocks.

He has signed orders to: Limit the length of beam trawls to nine metres.

Allow exemptions to ormer size limits for ormer farmers so they can grow them legally.

Empower fisheries officers to enforce EU rules on log books and landing declarations for foreign vessels.
