Hundreds stranded by Guernsey accident
Thursday 9th March 2006, 12:00AM GMT.
GUERNSEY closed its airport for almost eight hours yesterday after a freight plane overshot the runway.
Hundreds of people were left stranded, and the chaos was not over today.
The knock-on effect of the cancellations and delays was still disrupting flying this morning.
And things could get worse today as airlines struggle to clear the backlog.
The airport’s instrument landing system needs to be recommissioned following the incident.
The shutdown came just before noon when an Emerald Airways BAe HS748, flying in from Jersey, ran off the tarmac at the western end of the airfield.
shortly after the Emerald Airways plane had gone on to the grass.
