Ministers delay police powers on disorder

NEW police powers to deal with street disorder and stalking were delayed by the Council of Ministers yesterday after ministers raised concerns.

Discussion on a new law to crack down on rowdy behaviour in town and harassment was put off pending a report from Attorney General William Bailhache who has just returned to work after suffering a heart attack.

Deputy Chief Minister Terry Le Sueur – who led yesterday’s meeting because Chief Minister Frank Walker is away – said the discussion was put off because ministers raised concerns.

He said the general idea of the legislation was good, but that the detail might change.

At the meeting, ministers were briefed by the Chief Constable of the Isle of Man, Mike Culverhouse, on how his force dealt with rising disorder in the promenade area in its capital, Douglas.
