Commonwealth Games:Swimmers’ royal interlude

Monday 13th March 2006, 12:00AM GMT.

JERSEY’S Commonwealth Games swimming team had a surprise visit on Saturday when they bumped into Royalty.

The boys, Alexis Militis, Liam du Feu, Daniel Halksworth and Simon Le Couilliard, were all walking to get something to eat in the athletes’ village when they came across Prince Edward.

Prince Charles’ youngest brother was being taken on a tour of the village as part of an official visit to Melbourne.

And one of the official party asked the Jersey boys to talk to Prince Edward to ‘slow him down’ as he was whizzing through the village and was ahead of schedule.

‘I’m not sure whether he was bored or just in a hurry, but we were stopped and were asked to chat to the prince for a minute,’ said Daniel.

‘I must admit, though, he didn’t really seem that interested in what we had to say.

Maybe I shouldn’t say that because he is royalty.’ Alexis added: ‘He asked us about life in the village and we told him about the great atmosphere, and we spoke about the pool, because he had been there earlier in the day to see that.

He was a nice guy but I think we were just being used to slow him down a bit.’
