Games honour for cyclist

SAM FIRBY has been given the honour of carrying the Jersey flag in Wednesday’s opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games.

The Bristol-born 33-year-old is Team Jersey’s sole cyclist having also represented the Island in Kuala Lumpur in 1998.

A superb competitor he is managed by Toby Aubert, following the tragic death of Tony Richomme a short time before the team’s departure for Australia.

Jersey’s full-bore riflemen have been in action as they prepare for their Games challenge.

Cliff Mallett, a bronze medal winner in 1990, is the full-bore team manager for the Games.

Their scores from the Victoria Open Prize shoot were as follows: Syme Aggregate – 41, David Le Quesne 289.27; 51, Cliff Mallett 288.21; 57, Richard Benest 287.21.

Queen’s Prize: 45, C Mallett 390.3; 63, D Le Quesne 389.3; 92, R Benest 384.3.

Grand Aggregate: 43, Le Quesne 678.57; 45, Mallett 678.56; 65, Benest 671.56.
