Commonwealth Games:Something fishy going on

Tuesday 14th March 2006, 12:00AM GMT.

THERE is going to be something very fishy about Jersey’s involvement in the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony tomorrow.

According to Games officials in Melbourne there are many secrets in store for the extravaganza, which will be beamed around the globe to around a billion spectators.

Even the 12,000 Melbourne city volunteers who made up the crowd in Friday’s full rehearsal in the Melbourne Cricket Ground were not shown the full programme of events in case something slipped out.

Well, in Jersey’s case it has – in the form of a bass.

It is understood that each competing nation has been allocated a giant steel sea creature familiar to its shores.

Jersey has therefore been allocated a bass, while Guernsey has had to settle for a conger eel.

During Wednesday evening’s opening ceremony, which will be televised in the Island at around 9 am, the team will enter the stadium by walking down a large ramp behind a giant bass.

It is also understood Jersey will be one of the first teams to enter the 90,000-capacity stadium as the continent of Europe will be first in alphabetical order.

Wearing their striking red uniform and Panama hats, the team will then follow their fish down into the arena where other things are planned for it but, as yet, not revealed.

Jersey team manager Paul Huddlestone said: ‘Even we don’t know what is planned for Wednesday, but we have been told to expect some real treats.

‘The team is very excited to be involved and, to be honest, can’t wait for the competitions to finally begin after all of their training and preparation.’
