Top-up fees snub from UK
Tuesday 14th March 2006, 12:00AM GMT.
JERSEY was effectively rebuffed when it approached the UK government to allow Island students to borrow money from the Student Loans Company.
The States heard this morning that the Island’s Education authorities approached the company last year with a view to allowing local students to borrow to pay top-up and other fees.
However, when a meeting was held early last month with the UK Department for Education and Skills – which owns the Student Loans Company – the response ‘was not encouraging’, Assistant Education Minister Ben Fox told the House.
He added that a follow-up letter confirmed that no arrangements would be put in place for Jersey, Guernsey or students from the Isle of Man.
