Commonwealth Games:Badminton hopes shattered in team event

Friday 17th March 2006, 12:00AM GMT.

JERSEY’S badminton team will not be progressing through to the next round after suffering three defeats out of three.

Having lost to Canada 1-4 yesterday, today they went down to Singapore 5-0 and, this morning, South Africa 3-2.

But Elizabeth Cann can certainly be proud of her performances after winning her singles matches against Canada and South Africa and her doubles match, with Solenn Pasturel, against South Africa.

Because all of Jersey’s games against the African nation had been tight, all other matches in the arena had finished, meaning Jersey had the support of thousands of home supporters for their last match.

And in it, Cann and Pasturel played exceptionally well, beating Michelle Edwards and Kerry-Lee Harrington 21-14, 21-15.

They covered every inch of the court and never gave up, using their strength from the back of the court to overpower their opponents.

The remaining matches all resulted in defeats for the Island team.

After their match, Cann said: ‘We really enjoyed out there and the atmosphere was fantastic, with lots of the Aussie crowd getting behind us.

The games against Singapore and Canada were always going to be hard because they are both seeded teams.

We knew we had a chance against South Africa and although we didn’t win the tie overall, we were still able to get two victories, which is good for myself and the team.’ Pasturel added: ‘It’s been very tough but great experience so far.

All of the games we are having only strengthen us for the singles competitions.’ Jersey now play Mauritius tomorrow in their final group game.

Jersey’s results against South Africa were: Gavin Carter and Lucy Burns v Michelle Edwards and Dorian James 14-21, 12-21; Clive Dunford v Christoffel Dednam 14-21, 10-21; Elizabeth Cann v Kerry-Lee Harrington 21-14, 21-10; Gavin Carter and Dunford v James and Dednam 12-21, 8-21; Cann and Solenn Pasturel v Edwards and Harrington 21-14, 21-15.

Jersey’s result against Singapore was: Dunford v Yen Lee 6-21, 5-21; Pasturel v Aiying Xing 13-21, 7-21; Carter and Dunford v Ronald Susilo and Hendri Saputra 9-21, 7-21; Cann and Burns v Yanmei Jiang and Yujia Li 11-21, 6-21; Carter and Burns v Hendra Wijaya and Fan Liu 11-21, 4-21.
