Commonwealth Games:Good day for Island swimmers

Friday 17th March 2006, 12:00AM GMT.

IT was a good day in the pool for Jersey’s swimmers today as two personal bests were recorded, plus an Island record broken.

Simon Le Couilliard, who suffered bitter disappointment yesterday in the 200m fly, today lined up for the same discipline but over 50m.

And although his time wasn’t enough to take him into the final, he set a PB and a new Island Abacus record of 25.82 secs – 0.02 secs quicker than Olympian Simon Militis’s previous mark.

He finished sixth in heat five of the competition.

In the 200m freestyle Liam du Feu set a new PB with a time of 1 min 59.13 sec, placing him seventh in his heat.

But his time was 0.6 secs faster than his best, which he set qualifying for the Games.

Team manager and coach Paul du Feu said he was very pleased with today’s performances.

‘Simon has really picked himself up well after the disappointment of yesterday and has shown great character to set a new Island record like this.

The 50m fly isn’t his strongest event as it’s a sprint, which is more suited to the heavier guys.

But he is pleased with himself and we’ll just have to see how he gets on in the 100m now.

‘Liam is also delighted with his achievements today.

Unfortunately for him he was in an outside lane in a very quick heat and went off far to quickly.

But he was never going to qualify but thought he may as well go for it and give it his best shot.

For that he has been rewarded with a PB.’
