Commonwealth Games:Herbert an instant hit

Friday 17th March 2006, 12:00AM GMT.

BECKIE HERBERT’S first appearance at the Commonwealth Games had a mix of everything.

The Jersey teenager played an important role in England’s 5-0 trouncing of Canada in the ladies’ hockey tournament earlier today.

But it was a nightmare start as she came off the bench in the first half to find herself back on it moments later after being sin-binned for a foul.

But in the second half the 19-year-old played a crucial role down the right, making one goal and playing a key role in many others.

Known affectionately on the pitch as ‘Herbie’, her pace and skill made her a constant threat to the Canadians in the second half, who seemed unable to prevent her from cutting in and whipping fast crosses across the goal.

Wearing the No 26 shirt with her name printed across the back, Herbert remained in the pitch until about three minutes from the end when she was substituted.

After the match she said: ‘I was really disappointed at first because of the yellow card, which I felt was a bit harsh.

But in the second half I really picked my game up and felt that I could use my pace down the right.

‘We knew that we ought to beat the Canadians, but they were a tough side and really made it difficult for us.’ All but one of England’s goals came from penalty corners, which the side had ten of compared to Canada’s four.

It was one of Herbert’s runs which forced the fourth penalty corner after superb skill took her past three players before she was barged off the ball.

‘I’m really enjoying playing in a forward position because I am getting quite involved with the play,’ she added.

‘I just hope that I did enough to ensure that I keep making the team and getting a run out.

Scotland tomorrow will certainly be a tougher test.’ The side’s second group match against Scotland will kick off at 11 pm Jersey time tonight.
