Devlin eager to get Muratti call
Friday 17th March 2006, 12:00AM GMT.
JERSEY Scottish defender Scott Devlin is in line to win his first Muratti cap tomorrow in Alderney.
The 25-year-old tough-tackling stopper made his Island début in Jersey’s 1-0 South West Counties Championship victory against Gloucestershire at Springfield last month and he is hopeful of keeping his place in the team.
The Scotsman continues to serve Jersey Scottish well, having won several Jersey and Channel Islands’ titles while also having played in the Ambassadeur Bowl under-21 Muratti when in the age group.
But a senior cap eludes him and he is hoping that will be put right tomorrow.
Devlin said: ‘It has been frustrating being on the outside for so long; I’ve never been given a chance before but now hopefully I can have a good run in the team.
‘I’m a wee bit fitter this season and maybe that has helped me, I don’t know.
But now I’ve had a chance and given myself a pass mark, I hope I can become a regular in the side.
‘I’d love to play against Alderney, I don’t know if I am or not at the moment because the team has not yet been announced.
‘I’ve had to work hard to get into this position and if I play my normal game I should be okay.
It’s up to me now; I’ve got to continue to show my worth.’ Devlin, who is also commanding in the air, admits he knows little about Alderney.
‘I’m told they will battle hard throughout, that’s all I know about them.
The Jersey squad has a lot of ability so we should not have too much of a problem with them.
‘But sometimes football can be a strange game.
There are no guarantees of success, we have to apply ourselves correctly and be solid throughout and take our chances when they come along.
‘I’m confident we’ll get a result and then there will be Guernsey to look forward too later in the season.’ Grouville midfielder Russell Le Feuvre has been replaced in the Jersey squad by St Peter’s Bradley Vowden, a former Muratti captain.
Le Feuvre misses the trip north as he is assistant manager to Jersey Schoolboys’ Star Trophy squad and they face Guernsey at Springfield on Saturday night.
Jersey assistant manager Jon Welsh said: ‘Russell cannot be in two places at the same time so we’ve made the decision for him, he will stay in Jersey with the Star Trophy squad.
‘He has been preparing a team for one match all season so it’s only fair he stays with them and not let them down by missing their game.
‘Everyone is happy with the decision, both the player and the Island’s management team.’ Le Feuvre’s withdrawal leaves five players possibly making their first Muratti appearances.
Currently uncapped are Carl Eubank (St Paul’s), Peter Vincenti (St Peter), Luke Watson (Trinity), Jack Cannon (Jersey Wanderers) and Devlin.
Squad The other squad members are: Jimmy Styles (Trinity), Casey Hickling (Grouville), Stuart André (Jersey Scottish), Jon Fitzmaurice (Trinity), Luc Le Mière (Grouville), Bradley Vowden (St Peter), Dave Brodie (Jersey Scottish), Dominic Maher (St Peter), Craig Leitch (Jersey Scottish), Chris Andrews (Jersey Scottish), Ross Crick (Jersey Scottish), Danny Craven (Trinity) and David Le Roux (Trinity).
Alderney’s squad is: Matt Aldcroft, Jason Atkins, Simon Benfield, Michael Bohan, David Chadney, Steve Concanen, Liam Davey, Kevin Gentle, Chris Johns, Andrew Lawrence, Angus Macdonald, Emile Phelan, Martin Sebire, Andrew Stone, Peter Tugby, James Vizard, James Walker and Paul Williams.
Two years ago Jersey won 4-0 in Alderney with a couple of goals in each half, after the hosts had kept the visitors at bay for 30 minutes.
Seven of their then starting side are in tomorrow’s 18-player squad.
