Tsunami pair hit out at lack of support
Friday 17th March 2006, 12:00AM GMT.
A COUPLE who were injured in the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami have spoken out about the lack of support they received when they got back to Jersey.
Paul Murray (33) and Sally Huyton (27) say something needs to be done to ensure Islanders who suffer trauma abroad are given help to get their lives back on track.
The couple were celebrating Christmas with friends on the holiday Island of Phi-Phi when the tsunami struck, killing half the people on the Island.
Sally needed hospital treatment for injuries to her stomach and legs.
They say that from the moment they stepped onto the plane from Gatwick to Jersey, they were left to fend for themselves.
They are now asking Jersey to establish a system to help people who have experienced trauma abroad.
‘We felt so alone,’ Paul said.
‘We didn’t expect any preferential treatment.
A bit of guidance was all we wanted.’
