Games’ injury agony for Phelan

Monday 20th March 2006, 12:00AM GMT.

SIMON PHELAN’S Commonwealth Games have ended in disappointment after he injured himself in the qualifying round of the men’s high jump.

The Bath University student injured himself while trying to equal his personal best of 2.10m to qualify for the final.

After a nervous start at 1.95m, Phelan finally cleared it at the third time of asking.

He then cleared 2m first time and 2.05m at the second attempt.

But it was his first attempt at 2.10m – his personal best – which saw Phelan crash into the bar and apparently injure his ankle.

The Jersey team’s physio, Morag Obarska, entered the field to offer the 20-year-old some medical treatment, but was made to exit by an official.

He then failed to clear his next two attempts at the bar and looked very disappointed with himself.

Afterwards an upset Phelan said: ‘I’m not sure what it was but on my first attempt at 2.10m I injured my left ankle and knee and I wasn’t allowed any treatment by my team physio.

‘I’m not sure what else went wrong really.

I felt good and have had a good build up to the event.

There is a lot going on in the stadium but because it is so big, you are able to concentrate on your event really well.

‘At the end of the day, I am very disappointed but I am pleased to have been able to come out here and compete – it’s been a great experience.’ Jersey’s discus thrower Lauren Thérin decided not to enter the javelin event over the weekend.
