‘No to tower’
Monday 20th March 2006, 12:00AM GMT.
HUNDREDS of people rallied against the idea of tall buildings on the waterfront yesterday.
They gathered on the beach in the biting wind in an attempt to make their mark on the future of the site.
‘NO’ had been carved in the sand at West Park by members of Save Jersey’s Heritage, who organised the rally.
Chairman Marcus Binney addressed the crowd and was given a round of three cheers.
He pointed out a tower crane being used to build the Radisson Hotel, and said any high-rise towers would stand 40 to 65 ft above it.
A petition organised by the group, and calling for no more than six storeys on the waterfront, has been signed by 3,000 people and will form part of a consultation on Islanders views on the future of the site.
All the correspondence received by Planning on the matter will be forwarded to independent reviewer Christopher Shepley.
He will use it to compile the supplementary planning guidance which will provide the framework against which future applications to build on the site will be judged.
This guidance will be presented to the Council of Ministers for approval in April.
