Tuesday 21st March 2006, 12:00AM GMT.
IT has been all about the ladies in the singles’ event in badminton today in Melbourne.
Both Solenn Pasturel and Elizabeth Cann progressed through to round two while the men didn’t have as much luck.
Former national champion Cann swept aside her Australian opponent Liz Cheam 21-5, 21-5 and goes through to tomorrow and Thursday’s second round.
Pasturel also continued her good form with a victory over Uganda’s Fiona Ssozi.
She took the first set 21-5 and was winning the second 8-2 when her opponent pulled out through injury.
For the men Clive Dunford came up against the Seychelles’ Steve Malcouzane, who was a tough competitor for the 28-year-old clinical physiologist.
Dunford managed to take the first set to a tie-break before eventually losing it 20-22.
In the second set, which was again close, Dunford went down 15-21.
Dunford then teamed up with Gavin Carter in the doubles but they came up against the very strong pairing of Singapore’s Hendri Saputra and Ronald Susilo.
The Jersey boys lost 11-21, 9-21.
