Games hockey: Herbert shines, but England crash

Tuesday 21st March 2006, 12:00AM GMT.

BECKIE Herbert’s Commonwealth Games came crashing back down to earth today after England suffered a surprise 4-0 loss to New Zealand.

After scoring her first senior international goal yesterday during their 10-0 thrashing of Barbados, the Jersey girl was involved in today’s final group match defeat, meaning the side now meet tournament favourites Australia in the semi final.

Today’s loss was the first time England have conceded a goal in the tournament after beating Canada and Scotland 5-0 earlier in the week.

Beckie’s father Tim said: ‘I think the wheels came off today.

Ironically it was probably Beckie’s best game so far and she played the majority of the match, but England just didn’t perform.

‘It’s a big shame because now that means they have got to play Australia in the semi and they are the world number ones.’ The semi finals are to be played on Thursday.

The other semi will be made up from New Zealand and either India or Malaysia.

The runners up from the semis will contest the bronze, while the finalists play for silver and gold on Saturday.
