BECKIE HERBERT will be playing for a bronze medal on Saturday after England’s ladies were beaten in the semi final by Australia.

After a strong start from the England team, which won its first three matches in the competition without conceding a goal, Australia eventually won 3-0.

In sunny and hot conditions, where the temperature topped 30C, Beckie Herbert worked hard down the right wing, twice being substituted to have a break.

Although the side’s build-up and possession was excellent, they were unable to trouble the Australian goalkeeper in open play.

And even with five penalty corners, which England have been normally so good at converting, they still could not score.

After the match, 19-year-old Becky, who was cheered on in the crowd by her mum Shelagh and dad Tim, said: ‘There wasn’t much between the two sides in my opinion and I thought England were probably the stronger of the two.

It’s just we couldn’t convert our chances and they could.

‘I am pleased with the way I played because I have been working on one or two things, like the way I receive and turn with the ball, and they went much better today.

‘But at the end of the day, I am disappointed for myself and the whole team because we all worked really hard and prepared well for this game.
