‘Dramatic decline’ in revenue gained from tobacco duty
Friday 24th March 2006, 12:00AM GMT.
ISLANDERS kicking the smoking habit or using duty-free allowances for tobacco are cutting into the Treasury’s revenue from tobacco duty.
The Jersey In Figures booklet shows the Treasury made around £12.5m from tobacco duty in 2005, down from around £14m the year before.
The new head of Customs and Immigration, Mike Robinson, said there was ‘a dramatic decline’ in tobacco duty revenue down to changes in habits, fewer tourists and people using their allowances for duty-free cigarettes.
And he says that if the 2005 duty rate was charged on the quantity imported in 2000, the benefit to the Treasury would be £22.2m, not £12.5m.
