Prison minister ‘should resign’
Friday 24th March 2006, 12:00AM GMT.
HOME Affairs Minister Wendy Kinnard should resign and be replaced by someone who can do the job, Deputy Bob Hill said today in the wake of a second damning report on the Prison.
He said the situation at La Moye was appalling and it was time the Senator, who has direct responsibility for the jail, stepped down.
‘What I am suggesting is hardly revolutionary,’ he said.
‘If someone is not doing their job they should be replaced.’ His lack of confidence in the Senator is being echoed by Senator Ben Shenton, who will ask the Chief Minister in the States on Tuesday whether she still has his full confidence.
Referring to the second damning Her Majesty’s Inspectorate of Prisons’s report in five years, he said: ‘We have moved towards a position of collective responsibility and I think the whole Council of Ministers will have to take responsibility if this happens again.
I am prepared to give her the benefit of the doubt.Senator Kinnard was not available for comment this morning, but is expected to respond to any calls for her resignation on Tuesday.
