Commonwealth Games:Cann so close to matching Herbert bronze
Saturday 25th March 2006, 12:00AM GMT.
IT was pure agony for Elizabeth Cann in Melbourne today as she narrowly missed out on Jersey’s first medal of the Commonwealth Games.
The badminton star was beaten by Scotland’s Susan Hughes 21-19 in the third set after battling back from a horrendous opening – but despite leading and often looking the stronger she could not pull off her medal bid.
Had she done so that would have made it a tremendous day for Jersey as Islander Beckie Herbert had already won bronze with the England ladies hockey team in their play-off with New Zealand.
Said Cann moments after her battling display: ‘Obviously I’m very disappointed.
‘After I took the second game I was confident that I was going to go on and win it but I just couldn’t keep the confidence going long enough.
‘She was a good player and I struggled to control the length of my shots.’ Match score: Cann lost 5-21, 21-13, 19-21.
