No towers, say 5,000

MORE than 5,000 Islanders have signed Save Jersey Heritage’s petition against high-rise towers being built on the waterfront.

The organisation’s president, Marcus Binney, said that they had extended their deadline to 1 April, after which it will be presented to Environment Minister Freddie Cohen.

He said: ‘We are receiving strong support from people of all ages who are deeply concerned at the effects of ugly and ill-considered development which is alien to Jersey.

This support comes from the country parishes as well as St Helier.

From our experience, recruiting signatures in the street, it is impressive and rewarding how many people are keenly aware of the arguments.’ Mr Binney said that he had been struck by the number of young people who had signed the petition.
