Castle ready to face the world
Wednesday 29th March 2006, 12:00AM BST.
The Jersey Heritage Trust has spent £4.5 million restoring the medieval and Tudor hearts of the castle, reinstating ancient routes and reopening areas closed to the public for generations.
Now 21st century technology is being used to help visitors understand the historical and cultural significance of Jersey’s icon building with iPod tours and a virtual reality computer interpretation of the castle’s development.
Mont Orgueil (or Gorey Castle as it is still fondly known to Islanders) is currently swarming with craftsmen, Heritage Trust staff and volunteers as they work around the clock.
Heritage Trust director Jonathan Carter said that after years of talk and debate, excitement was mounting.
The reopening ceremony begins at 12.45 pm on the Castle Green.
