Trainee teacher sent to jail for assault on girl
Wednesday 29th March 2006, 12:00AM BST.
A TRAINEE teacher was jailed for six months yesterday for an indecent assault on a ten-year-old girl.
Philip Gordon Cunningham (25) was jailed for a further four months for contempt.
He denied the assault, but was convicted after a Magistrate’s Court trial.
He had admitted the contempt of court.
The court heard that a complaint was made 48 hours after the assault, which took place at a private address in Trinity in 2002.
Cunningham was charged nine months later.
He fled the Island before his trial in 2003 and did not return for two years.
A contempt of court charge was then added.
