Ladies’ football: Luton save earns St John double celebration

Friday 31st March 2006, 12:00AM BST.

ST JOHN FC ladies completed a league and cup double last night by lifting the Colin Welsh Trophy final at Springfield.

The Coca-Cola Combination ladies’ divisional champions defeated St Peter 2-1- a late penalty stop from St John’s Beverley Luton saving extra time.

Susan Stewart shot St Peter ahead only for the champions to recover to win with goals from Becky Darts and Laura Robertson.

St John manager Jayson Lee said: ‘It was an excellent penalty save, Bev guessed right by catching Jo Fuller’s hard-hit effort.

‘We’ve had a great season, this team are simply the best.

The game was just what we required with the Upton coming up, St Peter pushed us hard all the way.’ St Peter manager Alan Greenan said: ‘What a game, we pushed them hard at the finish and we were unlucky not to have gone into extra time.

‘Early on we had to do a lot of defending and we managed to get a goal on the break, Susan Stewart running half the length of the field before slotting the ball home.

‘St John have set a benchmark for ladies’ football; they were worthy winners on the night and congratulations to their management team and their players.

‘Other clubs now have something to emulate and hopefully we can do that in a few years’ time.

‘Last night we fielded five 16-year-olds and I’ve nothing but praise for them.

They worked exceptionally hard throughout and had we not been without senior players Sarah Gavey and Sarah Williams we may have won!’ Darts equalized for St John minutes after the resumption before young Robertson, who impressed in attack, hit their second from ten yards, the ball clipping the foot of an upright on its way in.

Said Lee: ‘The Upton is in two weeks’ time and we are really struggling to finance it.

It’s going to cost in the region of £2,000 for a flight and an overnight stay and it’s a burden St John FC could really do without.

‘We will represent Jersey in the fixture and if any company would like to support us I can guarantee them 100 per cent commitment from this great St John team.’ St Peter: Helen Lagadu; Laura Finney, Anna Brown, Sally Mayman, Candice Sharples, Annette Christensen, Susan Stewart, Gemma Dunning, Katy Da Silva, Joanne Fuller, Yolanda Gomes.
