Football:Crick passes half century as Scots lift cup
Wednesday 5th April 2006, 12:00AM BST.
STRIKER Ross Crick went through the 50-goal barrier for the second consecutive season last night as Jersey Scottish lifted the Le Riches Cup.
Scottish won a poor game 2-0 after extra time against title rivals Trinity at Springfield with Crick, who hardly had a kick all night, notching both goals to make it 51 this season for club and Island.
Despite missing a guilt-edged chance a minute earlier, Crick opened the scoring with an acute angle drive in the first period of extra-time.
Late on he tapped the ball into an open goal after substitute Paul Aitken did all the hard work on the right.
Crick has now scored a total of 32 goals in his last 15 matches – scoring on each occasion! The game was more like a relegation scrap than two of Jersey’s finest.
Both gave the ball away cheaply, there was little constructive passing – until extra time – and more often than not it was a big hoof forward.
There was also little goal-mouth action, although Trinity’s Jimmy Styles made two fine saves from Chris Andrews; firstly with a good reaction to palm the ball away from close range and then smartly smothering the ball at the forward’s feet when he appeared destined to round the ‘keeper and score.
Scottish’s win completed a Le Riche and Wheway Cup final double over Trinity.
The teams meet again on Saturday at Trinity, with the Coca-Cola Division I title, or a play-off against St Peter, at stake.
Scottish manager Bob Kearsey said: ‘It was a good win, we again dug in hard when we had to and cleared the ball quickly when under pressure.
‘It wasn’t pretty but you have to do that sometimes.
Defensively we were strong while the midfields nullified each other.
‘It was tight and I felt we deserved to win as we created the better chances.’ Trinity joint-manager Adam Reid said: ‘We’ve shuffled the pack and tried everything to beat Scottish in recent games and it’s not worked.
It’s certainly not been a lack of effort either.
‘It’s just not come off and we’ll try again on Saturday.
‘We found it hard to create, we just could not get around the back of them.
It really heart-breaking for our boys as they’ve worked so hard this season.’ Jersey Scottish: Steve Kean; Scott Devlin, Craig Ferey, Ryan Lumsden; Chris McNabb, Jordan Docherty, Dave Brodie, Mark Brown, Lee Burns; Chris Andrews, Ross Crick.
