No food waste at compost site
Wednesday 5th April 2006, 12:00AM BST.
STATES Members will decide where the new composting plant will be and what technology it will use – but food waste will not be included in the plant.
Transport Minister Guy de Faye accepted a proposition from St Helier Constable Simon Crowcroft in the States yesterday that no further steps should be taken to establish the plant until Members had decided where it should be, and what system it should use.
The Bailiff, Sir Philip Bailhache, ruled that the wording of the proposition limited it to green waste, and that anyone who wanted food waste included would have to try to rescind or amend part of the solid waste strategy agreed by the House last year.
The proposition by Mr Crowcroft was approved on a standing vote after Deputy de Faye accepted it.
Several Members still spoke on the subject, including Senator Stuart Syvret, who refuted allegations by Deputy Kevin Lewis that the compost plant was having an impact on the health of residents.
Senator Syvret went on to say that the Havre des Pas location was the most appropriate one because it was an industrial area near the power station and fuel farm.
And there was no residential accommodation within 250 metres of the site.
