Scottish U16s secure double

Wednesday 5th April 2006, 12:00AM BST.

THREE more Lloyds TSB Junior League championships were settled on Sunday morning.

Jersey Scottish won the under-16 Division I title to complete a league and cup double while the under-14 Division I and II honours were claimed by Trinity F&SC and Grouville respectively.

Trinity shared four goals with second-placed Jersey Wanderers to win Division I while Grouville returned 3-1 victors from St Ouen to take the Division II crown and keep their double hopes alive as they play in the Cory Cup final tomorrow evening at Springfield.

Scottish U16s won 5-3 against First Tower at La Hague Manor where Scottish manager Pat Brennan was removed from the line early on following a comment made to match official Garry Poole.

Declan Sowney scored a brace, Jordan McBride and Alex Gee singles with a Tower defender completing the scoring by putting the ball into his own goal.

Brennan’s champions will face Guernsey’s U16 champions in the John Leatt Memorial Trophy match next month.

Brennan said: ‘Jack Boyle got cautioned for what I thought was an innocuous challenge and I reacted to it.

I made a passionate statement and got sent off for doing so.

I apologised after but the damage was already done.

‘It was an exceptionally day for us in front of goal, four of our goals came from shots outside the penalty area.

One of Declan Sowney’s was a fantastic goal, there were four or five first-time passes before he hit it and it went in off the underside of a crossbar!’ Tower manager Simon Lester said: ‘We had a mad opening and were 3-0 down inside 16 minutes.

We gave away all the goals before getting one back before half time.

‘I can’t fault my lads at all in the second half; they got back to 4-3 before then unluckily conceding an own goal.

Full credit to Scottish, they played well but at the start of the season they were expected to walk the division.

‘I’d like to think that Jersey Wanderers and Tower have pressed them hard all the way and deservedly kept an interest in the destination of the title.’ Dean Jones scored twice for Tower with Kieran Lester getting the other, his first goal of the season.

Wanderers maintained their hopes of finishing second after goals by James Quérée and Michael Weir gave them a 2-0 win at St Brelade.

St Clement and Rozel Rovers shared six goals at St Clement in Division II.

Liam Emery (two) and Tom Brockwell were on target for the hosts and Nick Bolton (two) and Danny Huet for the visitors.

Trinity took the U14 Division I title after Reuben Pestana and Aaron Young fired them two-up at the Hockey Club.

Wanderers, who needed to win the game to win the division, fought back to equalise with goals from Johnny Hickling and Kamen Nafkha.

Grouville pocketed the Division II silverware after Tom O’Toole notched a brace and Ben Griffin a single in a 3-1 success at St Ouen.

Reuben Vieira replied.
