Avian flu fears: Birds destroyed
Monday 10th April 2006, 12:00AM BST.
BIRDS at the Animals’ Shelter were destroyed over the weekend because of avian flu fears.
But tests have already ruled out fears that bird flu has spread to Jersey.
Tissue samples were sent to a UK lab for tests after an injured duck was taken to the Animals’ Shelter by a member of the public on Friday evening.
By Saturday morning the duck was showing ‘flu-like symptoms’ and was slaughtered, along with all the birds it had been in contact with.
Owners of poultry within a one-kilometre area around the Grève de Lecq car park where the duck was found have been ordered to keep their birds under cover, and the car park itself has been disinfected.
