Employment Law inquiries soar

INQUIRIES to the Jersey Advisory and Conciliation Service (JACS) have soared by 60% in the past year, with a total of 7,510 employers and employees seeking advice.
The rise was particularly marked in the last quarter of 2005, following the introduction of the new Employment Law, with an average of 200 new inquiries every week.
Since the law was brought in the nature of the inquiries has changed substantially, says director David Witherington.
‘Since July 2005 our investigations must now include not only the issue of whether a dismissal was wrongful, but also whether it was fair as defined by the new legislation – far more complex and time-consuming.
