Latest win keeps Slamma Jamma in title race
Thursday 13th April 2006, 12:00AM BST.
THE four top teams were in action in the Landsteinar Basketball League last night, with second-placed Slamma Jamma edging out Warriors to stay in contention for the title.
FJ Carter Celtics, however, maintained their impressive lead at the top with a victory over Storm.
FJ Carter Celtics 72, Storm 69: The defending champions were pushed all the way by Storm, who had several players home from university to strengthen the team.
Two minutes from the end they were tied at 66-66 but then Chris Byrne and Paul Graf scored three times to take Celtics ahead.
Storm weren’t finished yet and Isidro Da Mata hit a three-pointer, but Celtics shut them out to win.
Slamma Jamma 79, Warriors 73: Warriors were within three points of Slamma Jamma at the end of the second quarter, having been 31-14 down at the end of the first.
Great outside shooting from Slamma’s Michael Pusz and inside moves by Greg Ruellan kept the score close but Pusz’s eight three-pointers – equalling the league record – took Slamma to victory.
League points: FJ Carter Celtics played 22, points 62; Slamma Jamma 20, 52; Storm 22, 44; Warriors 21, 43; Sentinels 22, 30; Island Juniors 23, 27.
