Under Vincenti’s spell
Thursday 13th April 2006, 12:00AM BST.
JERSEY’S under-21s will bid to win back the Ambassadeur Bowl in Guernsey tomorrow afternoon.
The visitors will be aching to avenge last season’s defeat at Springfield when they were beaten 2-1 in a game they dominated.
Their downfall came as a result of missing some good chances, twice being denied by Guernsey’s goalkeeper – and losing concentration in a two-minute spell when the Sarnians bagged both their goals.
Four of last season’s squad involved survive for tomorrow as manager Peter Vincenti returns to the Muratti stage for the second time in his career.
And in typical Vincenti style he has no doubt who will win.
Vincenti said: ‘Guernsey will have to be good to beat this lot.
I have a strong feeling we are going to win.
We have a good group of players and they are all in sync.
Team spirit is good, many are friends and they play and look well together.
‘They understand the tactics, they’re up for the game and I’m confident they can win.’ Vincenti says his side must be tight defensively while he looks to his big players to perform.
‘J-P Martyn has trained well and he is looking impressive.
He’s had his problems socially and this is a fantastic opportunity for him to prove to people he has changed.
‘He has been kept out of the Trinity side by older players but he has grown up and now showing a great attitude.’ Vincenti’s son Peter will captain the side, a decision made by his backroom staff.
‘I left that decision to Jon Welsh and Dave Walsh, they have been at the heart of the under-18s for the past six years so I left the decision to them.
They gave Peter the captaincy in the U18s so to get it again, obviously, I’m delighted.’ Guernsey played two matches in Hampshire last weekend winning 4-1 against the Army and drawing 0-0 against an English Colleges’ southern regional team.
Guernsey boss Steve Ogier said: ‘Many of the lads are involved with the senior island squad anyway, so the trip just really confirmed what we already knew about them.
‘It wasn’t a case of someone coming out of the woodwork and playing his way into the team.
The boys are looking forward to the Muratti; and although we don’t know much about the Jersey side we will be going for three wins on the bounce.’ Vincenti added: ‘From a senior perspective youth doesn’t always work.
I’ve been thinking about it with the possibility of playing at a higher level in the future.
‘If say we played San Marino or Liechtenstein I don’t think it would be right to go with youth, youth and youth.
There has to be experience.
‘Our players are in their prime in their mid to late 20s, I don’t think it’s right that people like Ryan Lumsden, Mark Brown and Ross Crick should be left on the shelf just because they’re in the 26-29 year age bracket.
‘Under-21s should be for the U21 Muratti, there are a few exceptions and that’s the way I’m looking at it.’ First Tower goalkeeper Jack Jouanny misses out because of a virus.
He has been replaced on the bench by Jersey U18 goalkeeper Greg Forster, of Jersey Wanderers, who performed well in the Junior Muratti.
Vincenti has named his starting line-up as follows: Casey Hickling (Grouville), Tom Poole (First Tower), Joel Speight (First Tower), Kevan Crowell (St Peter), Sam Dewhurst (First Tower), Peter Vincenti (St Peter), Luke Watson (Trinity), Jack Cannon (Jersey Wanderers), Scott Walsh (St Peter), Luc Le Mière (Grouville) and Jean-Paul Martyn (Trinity).
Substitutes are: Ryan Durand (St Peter), Ross Goodchild (First Tower), Bradley Russell (First Tower), Martin Higgins (First Tower), Greg Forster (Jersey Wanderers) and Danny Hughes (Grouville).
Guernsey: Rhys Gower (Bels), Tom Le Tissier (Rangers), Sam Cochrane (Bels), Chris King (Bels), Darren Martin (North), Ollie McKenzie (North), Steve Concanen (St Martin’s), Tom Strawbridge (Sylvans), Jacques Isabelle (North), Joby Bourgaize (Bels), Simon Marley (Bels), Paul Ramsden (Bels), Brent Marquand (Bels), Dave Rihoy (North), Alex Le Prevost (North), Marc McGrath (Bels) and Ross Allen (Rangers).
