Football festival: Mission accomplished

Saturday 15th April 2006, 12:00AM BST.

JERSEY finished their Primary Schools Football Festival campaign with a victory yesterday – and the overall feeling that they had achieved their objectives for the week.

A solitary Stevie Ellis goal, tucked away from six yards towards the end of dour encounter against Bath A at the FB Fields yesterday, ended the week on a winning note, although it was far from the Island side’s best performance.

Said coach Mark De Luca: ‘That’s football.

I think we played better on Thursday in losing to Hackney, but won today when far from at our best.

‘But overall the week has gone well and the lads have achieved the three objectives we set them at the start: enjoy themselves; learn from each game; and come off the field knowing you’ve given your best.

I think they’ve done that.’ Jersey’s defence took the plaudits yesterday, with David Blampied once again catching the eye of De Luca and assistant coach Tony Hoyland.

‘He has come on enormously this week,’ said De Luca.

Jersey’s three-match winning run came to an end on Thursday with a 1-0 defeat by Hackney.

De Luca said: ‘It was an excellent game, we competed well against a tall and physical side and we should have won.

‘A mistimed tackle by Matthew Wellman led to Hackney scoring a penalty just before half time.

Playing into the wind in the second half we took the game to them and had six clear-cut opportunities – but we did not pull the trigger infront of goal.’ Jersey: Jordan Le Guyader, Jamie Vibert, Jamie Gray, Ryan Thorpe, David Blampied, Matthew Wellman, Kavaghn Miley, Luke Stratford, William Humphrey, Richard Goncalves, Danny Brannen, Jamie Burrows, Jack Hinton, Charlie Griggs, Steven Ellis and James Le Feuvre-Hunt.
