Football:Jersey regain U21 Muratti honours
Saturday 15th April 2006, 12:00AM BST.
JERSEY under-21s won back the Ambassadeur Bowl in convincing fashion in Guernsey yesterday and the 4-0 scoreline was no more than they deserved.
Despite an uneventful and strangely quiet first half Jersey closed it with two goals in the last seven minutes from captain Peter Vincenti and Luc Le Mière.
Manager Peter Vincenti senior adjusted Jersey’s formation at the break, from 3-5-2 to 4-4-2, and it paid dividends as Jersey created a string of chances to run Guernsey ragged.
Jean-Paul Martyn bagged a brace of headed goals and hit the woodwork.
Scott Walsh and Vincenti were also denied by the framework.
Vincenti snr, chalking up his sixth U21 Muratti success in seven outings, said: ‘The boys did very well.
It showed today what I thought – we are a good outfit and we played with a lot of composure.
‘Guernsey came forward in the first 15 minutes and our backs were to the wall.
But once we found our feet we played well and took our chances.
‘Second half we were excellent in every department.
Tactically we got it right, we scored from some good set pieces.
All-in-all it’s been a great day.’ Vincenti jnr, who won the G E Muddyman Memorial Trophy for man-of-the-match, said: ‘Everyone was a bit nervous and the first goal settled us.
Getting the second right at the end of the half made it even better.’ Guernsey manager Steve Ogier said: ‘Jersey fully deserved their win.
We told the players not to give away free kicks in dangerous areas because of Vincenti’s strength but they did not listen.
‘He won so many balls in the air and full credit to Jersey they controlled 80 per cent of the game.
‘Too many of our players did not turn up.
Why they didn’t play I just do not know.
‘It’s embarrassing being in charge of the side today – I just can’t put my finger on why it happened.’ Vincenti nodded Jersey ahead three minutes before the interval before Luc Le Mière followed up Vincenti’s shot, spilled by goalkeeper Rhys Gower, to make it 2-0.
Jersey wasted an excellent opportunity to put the game to bed when Scott Walsh screwed a shot horribly wide after Martyn’s effort came back off the inside of a post.
Walsh saw Gower tip over another shot after Vincenti nodded down Tom Poole’s cross but minutes later Martyn got a deserved goal – heading in Jack Cannon’s corner.
Martyn nodded home his second on 64 minutes from Le Mière’s free kick.
Tom Poole made a great tackle to deny Guernsey’s Dave Rihoy while Casey Hickling pulled off saves from Ollie McKenzie and Rihoy again.
Deep into stoppage time Vincenti hit the crossbar again with a half volley from 20 yards.
