Ministers plan inter-island talks on saving cash

Saturday 15th April 2006, 12:00AM BST.

MINISTERS from Jersey and Guernsey are to discuss ways of saving money through co-operation, but some Guern-sey politicians say that Chief Minister Frank Walker’s recent criticism was wide of the mark.

The Policy Council has formally written to the Council of Ministers inviting them for talks over areas where the islands could save money by doing things together.

But Health Minister Peter Roffey, Education Minister Martin Ozanne and Social Security Minister Mary Lowe insisted that their departments worked well with their Jersey counterparts, with Deputy Lowe adding that Senator Walker should speak to Jersey’s Social Security Minister to ‘find out what was really happening’.

In a story published today in the Guernsey Press, all three Guernsey ministers reject Senator Walker’s claim that there was not enough partnership between the islands, adding their departments were in regular contact with their ‘opposite numbers’.

‘Guernsey’s health service has good relations with its Jersey counterpart and I am always ready to meet with Senator Syvret and his officers to discuss matters of common concern,’ said Deputy Roffey.
