Plan for flats at St Aubin goes to appeal

Tuesday 18th April 2006, 12:00AM BST.

PLANS to build more than 30 flats on the site of the Mont de la Rocque Hotel in St Aubin will be the subject of a public hearing tomorrow.

Planning officers turned down the proposed development in 2004, and a Board of Administrative Appeal will hear a complaint by the developers against the decision tomorrow.

Mont de la Rocque Holdings Ltd wanted to demolish the hotel, car park and neighbouring house and build 33 flats with a pool and gym.

But officers said that the scheme amounted to overdevelopment and would have an unacceptable impact on the character of the area.

Unacceptable In January 2004 Planning turned down the application, saying that the position, height, mass, scale, area and design of the buildings, as well as the loss of existing vegetation, would have an unacceptable visual impact on the area’s character.

The company will argue their case at St Brelade’s parish hall at 9.30 am, and Islanders who live near the hotel say that they will be there to hear the outcome.
