Protesters swamp Cherbourg
Tuesday 18th April 2006, 12:00AM BST.
ANTI-nuclear protesters staged a massive international demonstration in Cherbourg at the weekend against government proposals to build the first of a new generation of European Pressurised Reactors at Flamanville on the Normandy coast, opposite Sark.
Greenpeace member Senator Stuart Syvret was unable to attend the event, but has once again stated his opposition to nuclear power, saying that ‘it’s part of the problem, not part of the solution’.
The rally, which was timed to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the world’s worst nuclear accident at Chernobyl in Russia, attracted almost double the number of people organisers ‘Sortir du Nucleaire’ had hoped for – between 20,000 and 30,000, although Cherbourg police put the figure at 12,500.
