Rise seen in switch to water metering
Tuesday 25th April 2006, 12:00AM BST.
A QUARTER of all Islanders are now using water meters in their homes and businesses.
On the day that Jersey Water have announced pre-tax profits of £2.4m, the company says it ultimately wants to see every customer on the meter system.
David Norman, the chairman of the company which is 73.9 per cent States-owned, said: ‘We view metering as the fairest way to charge for water and actively encourage the use of meters and ultimately would like to see all customers being metered.
‘Some 25% of customers now pay by meter, an increase of nearly 80% in two years.
Work started in 2004 to replace old water meters with electronic units, which allow semi-automated meter reading.
This work is continuing.’
