Green baize horror for Jersey
Wednesday 26th April 2006, 12:00AM BST.
GUERNSEY swept the board to return home with the three pieces of snooker and billiards silverware at stake over the weekend.
Ian Gould’s first appearance in a CI snooker final ended in a 4-0 defeat by Adam Shorto on Friday night at the Mechanics’ Institute.
Gould opened the best of seven frames match well to lead by 55 points after three breaks in the mid-teens.
Shorto responded with 21 and 23 and after a foul by Gould the Sarnian returned to the table to make a 35-clearance and win the opener.
Shorto controlled the next winning 74-29 after breaks of 23, 26, 23 and 15.
Gould led in the third 30-9 before breaks of 28 and 39 took Shorto to a 76-30 success and within one frame of the title.
Shorto opened the fourth frame with a 30.
Gould was then snookered behind the black to concede further points.
He made a brief comeback with an effort of 22 only for Shorto to show his class with another break up to pink to win 86-38 and 4-0 overall.
Gremlin’s A surged to an 11-1 success against Jersey’s top two teams, Services and Mechanics A, in the Upton club match.
In a repeat of the previous night’s action, Jersey’s Gould was again beaten by Shorto, this time 3-0.
Gould was level at 48-all before Shorto potted an excellent long pink while holding the cueball in position for the black to win the first.
Shorto scored a 48 break in the next while winning the last on the black.
Robbie Kilpatrick was the only Jersey cueist to win a frame, 58-44 against Jez Rowe.
Guernsey’s dominance continued with Adrian Lihou running in breaks of 49, 47 and 32 to defeat Jeremy Gogan 3-0.
Bob Bradshaw was also defeated 3-0, Ian Platt winning assisted by breaks of 23, 34 and a 33-clearance.
Kilpatrick was Jersey’s sole victor in the billiards team inter-insular, played on Saturday night, when Guernsey claimed back the Silver Jubilee Trophy 4-1.
Jersey’s Martyn Le Gallais lost the opener to Barry Pallot 200-161.
Richard Le Gallais struggled with his game going down 200-133 against Chris Lowe.
Jersey’s champion Guy Heys did his best to keep the match alive but some excellent long potting and break building on the red resulted in a 200-105 defeat against newly-crowned CI snooker champion Shorto.
Kilpatrick beat Mark Jeffreys 200-180 to record Jersey’s sole win leaving Jersey skipper Mick Mahrer to be edged out in a closely-run affair by big-potter Martyn Desperques.
Trophies were donated by Furniture World 2001 Ltd.
