THE BBC is to release the first series of Bergerac on DVD.

From 8 May it will be possible to purchase the first ten episodes of the detective series which proved such a ratings winner for the BBC in 1981 that it ran successfully for a further ten years.

The Jersey-set crime show starred John Nettles as Det Sgt Jim Bergerac of the fictional Bureau des Etrangers, a tough professional with a rebellious streak.

At the start of the first series Jim, a reformed alcoholic, has just pulled himself up from rock bottom and is returning to work at the Bureau.
