Accies’ sights on first Junior Upton success
Friday 28th April 2006, 12:00AM BST.
HOLDERS North stand in Sporting Academics’ way of a first-ever Junior Upton success tomorrow at Springfield.
The Accies won the Junior League under-18 Division I title for the first time this season and they’re hoping to double up with success in the Portsmouth Trophy match.
North have had another all-conquering Youth One season in Guernsey where they are unbeaten having won every game bar one, including two cup finals.
Accies manager Bob Doran said: ‘We’re looking forward to the game and if we play to our full potential we can win it.
‘Last Sunday we had an excellent work out against the The Rest and although we were beaten 3-2 it was a good game.
We were slow starters and two-down but we battled back really well.
‘We’ve a great spirit in the squad and we’re strong all round.
We have had the odd bad result here but that happens sometimes.
‘The boys have been brilliant all season and it’s nice for a change that a lesser-known club is playing in the Upton.
We know it will be a tough game and we will give it full commitment throughout.’ North are playing in their fourth consecutive Upton, having won last year for the eighth time in 19 appearances.
Coach Mick Le Prevost said: ‘We’ve had a great season and last week we won a cup final 4-3 after being 3-0 down at half time.
It was a fantastic result.
‘Unfortunately we will not be at full strength because one of our leading players is away, while another is struggling with an injury.
‘But it gives others opportunities and those that come in have done well when they’ve played previously.
We have a good footballing side, the players listen and we only lose one player at the end of this season.’ North won Guernsey’s Youth One title with six matches remaining.
Sporting Academics: David Clarke, Derek Pereira, Jamie Kyle, Richard Blackburn, Tom Wiggley, Sean Doran (captain), Ben Gallichan, Ryan Ennis, Ben Blacker, Jamie Savory, Paul Dingle, Sean Ganly, John Schilladay, Oliver Brewster, Chris Ward and Daniel Gillett.
Kick-off is at 2 pm.
