Launch of dog mess campaign

Saturday 29th April 2006, 12:00AM BST.

A CAMPAIGN starts tomorrow to stop dog owners failing to pick up their animals’ mess and reminding them of their legal responsibilities.

Volunteers and staff members from a number of environmental organisations will be patrolling problem areas and handing out educational leaflets and free dog waste bags.

The campaign starts as the summer law banning dogs without leads from beaches between 10.30 am and 6 pm starts on Monday and runs until 1 October.

Countryside manager John Pinel said the aim of the campaign, which is in its second year, was to improve the cleanliness of the Island’s streets and rural areas by encouraging people to clear up after their dogs.

Anyone willing to patrol an area where dog waste is causing a nuisance is asked to contact the Environment department on 866200.
