No racial abuse, Muratti fans are warned

Saturday 29th April 2006, 12:00AM BST.

POLICE have warned that anyone throwing carrots or racially abusing fans as ‘donkeys’ at the Muratti at Springfield on Monday could be arrested.

Jersey will take to the field on Monday looking to secure their 48th Muratti win in the 90th time the match has been played.

And while the police say they want the 3,000 fans expected at Springfield to have a good time, they will not let a rowdy minority ruin the game for everyone else.

In recent years Jersey fans have thrown carrots on to pitches to poke fun at Guernseymen, nicknamed ‘donkeys’ – opinion varies as to precisely why.

Inspector Sara Garwood said that they did not want to ruin anyone’s fun, but that they would take any problems seriously.
